My Orcon
The theoretical capability of our ADSL2+ Orcon+ network is a speed of 24Mbps download and 1Mbps upload, but that speed is the absolute maximum, and is unlikely to be attainable for those who don’t reside literally within a telephone exchange.
The actual speed you experience will vary according to such factors as the distance you are from the exchange, and the quality of the wiring to and within your house.
The further you are away from your local exchange, the lower your connection speed will be.

I Have been with Orcon many years and have had a happy run with them using “Dial up” Running speed of average 56Kbps.In the last month it has been Failing to connect at times the if by chance I fluke a connect, it the runs on average 28-32-37 Kbps! Why? Cheers

Mark, dial up can be affect by any tone dial device you may have on the same line as your dial-up connection. Also the speed is at such a low rate, you shouldn’t even notice a difference.

Exactly what brand DSLAM is Orcon using in the exchanges in Auckland?
I ask this as I use to work for an Australian ISP trouble shooting ADSL2+.
I’m exactly 1500 Meters from the Ellerslie Exchange on the corner of Kalamia St and great South road and find that if my modem (Linksys) sync’s at 18MBps my international speed is crap, this shouldn’t be happening.
If I use an Orcon Modem my speed is crap all together.
I tend to find that Linksys DSLAMS and some Arcatel DSLAMS seem to put out good speeds and most other DSLAMs give out crap speeds.
what DSLAMs is Orcon using?

at 69db your luck to be getting adsl at all at that rate you would seem to be on the outer limits of adsl

@Jayson - we use Siemens equipment.

I recently changed ADSL2+ modems from an older Linksys AG241 to a new Netgear DGN2000. Downstream sync speed went from 13Mbps to over 17Mbps. In the ‘real world’ I get about 15Mbps throughput. That is on an Orcon plan on the Telecom network. Just wanted to point out the simple difference a better modem can make.

i heard thru da grapevine about orcon…that their speeds support upto 24mbps under the new adsl+2 tech…but my friend is only 120 to 150 meters from the exchange and yet he only gets about 8 to 10mbps…he moved house and orcon could not support that area so he switched to telecom in a adsl+2 area…hes now about 200 to 210 meters away from the exchange, but now hes gettin constantly 16 to 18mbps…why is this?

I am living in the Massey East area of Auckland. Currently with Vodafone but not yet on ADSL2. I have no ideas where the cabinets are, therefore how far away I am from them.
Line attenuation down/up : 55.5 / 31.5 on my modem.
Any ideas if my speeds would be better with Orcon (maybe you have a local ADSL2+ cabinet?)?

Im on a 4mbit/2mbit cable plan with telstraclear and live in the orcon ADSL2+ network area. Is orcons ADSL2+ network likely to be any faster ?

I have a similar issue like Mark White did back in December 2008. For the past couple of weeks my dial up connection has become ridiculously slow and I have made no changes whatsoever to my dial up settings or anything.

This could be caused by such things as issues with the cables running to your phone jack or noise on the line. let your Homeline provider know if you have extra noise on the line so they can investigate and resolve.

http://www.speedtest.net rates my download speed at 1Mbps.I’m on your max speed download/upload plan. My house wiring was upgraded recently.
I dont have the patience to read the appalling writing on this website in search of a concisely written sentence containing useful information about anything at all, so instead of wasting MY time I’ll waste YOUR time:
Does a download speed of 1 Mbps suggest there may be a problem with my connection?

When I joined Orcon I was getting 2500 Kbps average download speed, lately it has been 1200 Kbps. All equipment the same except for a faster computer.

Well i signed up, and can occasionally get sustained downloads of over 2Mb/s down, and about 700kbps up, so i’m very pleased with it. The first thing i did was a speedtest, which got 15Mb/s dl!

It’s really quite hard to say. The actual speed that your friend experienced will have been influenced by the quality of the wiring within each respective house, and whether he used a new modem / router.
It is also important to note that judging the distance to a local telephone exchange in a straight line is not always the most accurate measure. This is because the cabling sometimes runs around all over the place before reaching its final destination, and therefore an exact distance is hard to gauge without doing some tests at our end.
@ Amrit
We are not currently operating in the cabinets with our own equipment, and are waiting on a final determination from the Commerce Commission before we could comment on any possible roll-out of Orcon cabinets.
@ Dan Brough
It is rather difficult to say. Our median download speed on our Orcon+ network is around 10 Mbps, so you will probably see an improvement there. However, the maximum upload speed is 1 Mbps.
@ Richard Smith
Unfortunately it is rather hard to comment one way or the other. The speed you experience is determined by many different factors, such as your distance from the telephone exchange, the type of modem / router you’re using, how many jacks you have in your house, and the quality of your wiring.
If you have recently had wiring upgraded, and have noticed a decrease in speed since that time, then that could be the culprit. Your best bet would be to call our Contact Centre on 0800 131415, and they will be able to take you through some troubleshooting tips and techniques to try and see what the story is.
@ Sait Akkirman
As per above, try giving our Contact Centre a call, and they will hopefully be able to identify and resolve any particular issue.

I have Orcon but only see < 1 mb/s (from isposure). My modem tells me I have 67 db line attenuation. What speed should I expect to see depending on how far from the exchange I am. I reckon your engineers could guestimate line speed from distance to the exchange. Then I would know if I should upgrade the home wiring.
