Tutorial: Create a Wireless Network with your Siemens Speedstream 6520 Wireless Modem

Please follow these steps to set up your a wireless network with your Siemens Speedstream 6520 Wireless Modem.
To create a wireless network you first need to enable the wireless functionality of the router. To do this you need to connect the router by an Ethernet cable to your computer. Once the wireless modem is plugged into your computer via Ethernet and turned on please follow these steps to enable the wireless functionality.
If you have already enabled your wireless network please click here to go to the instructions to connect a new computer to the wireless network.

  1. Open Internet Explorer or your preferred browser.
  2. In the address bar type 192.168.254.254 then press enter.
  3. This will bring up the main page for the Router. 
  4. Once the start up page has loaded you will then need to login by clicking on the "Go" button in the top left of the window.
  5. This will bring up the Login page. Once the page has loaded please enter the username username and your password, then click "Log In".


Note: The default password is "admin", although this may have changed if you have changed the password. 
This will bring you to the following page. 
Once this page has loaded click on "Home Network" and then click "Advanced". 
Once the new page has loaded you will have a list of links, please click on the "Configure the Local Speedstream Gateway Wireless Network" link.
This will bring up a new page called "Wireless Summary". 
Once this page has loaded place click on "Begin Wireless Wizard".
On the new page under where it says "Wireless Interface" please click "Enable".
Once you have changed the wireless interface to "Enable" please enter a name for your wireless network where it says SSID (e.g. "Home Office").
Then please click on the "Next" link. 
On the new page, please change "Security Mode" to "WEP 64-bits" and click "Next".
This will bring up the "Wireless 64-Bit WEP Configuration" page.
On this page you will need to enter a passphrase to generate your WEP keys. We have used "icecream" but you can use anything. Once you have entered a phrase click "Generate Key".
 
This will generate four 64 Bit Key's. Please select any one of the four keys and click "Next".
Note: You will need the 64 Bit Key that you select in the future for devices to log on to the wireless network. Make sure you can remember your chose a passphrase that you will remember.
Once you have clicked "Next" a new page will load called "Wireless Filter Configuration". This is an advanced page for allowing access and denying access to certain computers or devices. We have set the "Wireless Filter" mode to "Disable".
Please click on the "Next" button to bring you to the "Wireless Options Configuration Page".
On this page pleas make sure that:
"Data Transfer Rate:" is set to "Auto"
"RTS/CTS Threshold:" is set to "2432"
"Fragmentation Threshold:" is set to "2346"
Once these setting are correct please click "Next" to bring up the "Wireless Wizard" page.
Once this page has loaded, you have finished enabling your wireless network so click "Finish".
 
This will bring up the "Wireless Summary" page again, but next to where it says "State" it should say "Enabled". Please ensure your settings are the same as the screen shot below ("SSID" and "Security Key Info" may be different"). 
If all these details are the same please click on the "Reboot" button to save the changes, and then once the new page loads click on "Reboot" to restart the router.
Once your modem has fully rebooted, please close your browser.
You are now able to unplug the Ethernet cable from the router and the computer.
How to connect other computers to your wireless network
On the computer you want to connect to the wireless network please follow these steps.
Once your browser is closed please click on the "Start" menu on the bottom of your screen, the click on "All Programs", hover over "Accessories", then hover over "Communications" and then click on "Network Connections". 
Once "Network Connections" has opened under where it says "LAN or High-Speed Internet" please right click on "Wireless Network Connection" and then click "View Available Wireless Networks".
This should load the "Wireless Network Connection" window, and you should be able to see the wireless network you have set up.
Note: If there is nothing in your list you will need to click the "Refresh network list" button.
 
Once you see your network, make sure it is highlighted and then click "Connect".
Once you have clicked "Connect" it will ask you for your "Network Key". Please enter your 10 character key next to where it says "Network Key" and then retype the 10 character key where it says "Confirm Network Key".
Note: Your "Network Key" is the 64 Bit Key that you generated with a passphrase in step 16.
Once you have entered and confirmed your network key click on connect.
 
If everything is successful, the "Wireless Network Connections" window should say "Connected" next to your wireless network that you set up.
You should now be able to browse the internet.
