FAQ: Does everything I do on the O Zone websites not count towards my data usage?

Almost everything.

You can surf the sites, upload and download content to and from them.

There are a couple of things to be aware of though:

Ads
If the site carries advertising this may still count towards your data use (just the ad itself). This is because some sites have their advertising served from a seperate server than the one that serves the site itself.

Content embedded from other sites
If there is content embedded on a page that is not from the site itself this will count toward your data usage. A good example of this would be a Youtube video embedded in a page on one of the sites in the O Zone. The content of the page won't count toward your data usage, but the YouTube video will. Again, this is because they are served from 2 different servers.

Important note about downloading games from Steam:

We have a Steam Content Server in our datacentre, and have made downloads from it free via O Zone.

BUT, there are a couple of things to be aware of so that you don’t get a nasty shock after downloading loads of games.

How the system works is that we download Steam games to our server (and we have pretty much the whole catalogue now), and then when you download them from our server, we can offer them to you without the data affecting your datacap.

But – and it’s a trick to watch out for – the way Steam has built the system, there is no way to lock you onto our server.

That this means is that when our server is busy, you’ll start downloading from another server. That’s great news if you want to get the game fast, but means that you’ll be charged for the data.

The best thing to do is select a default region (it’s called New Zealand – Orcon), and then the system will try and connect to us first.

But, in some cases you’ll start downloading from elsewhere. So, to summarise, we can’t guarantee your Steam client will use our server, but if it does, data will be free.

If you have more questions, drop the community at games.orcon.net.nz a line and they’ll be able to offer advice. Happy gaming!
