Glossary: Dial Up

Dial up is the term for connecting to the Internet on a dial-in basis, so that a modem dials a particular number and is then granted access to the Internet. Dial up (as opposed to broadband) takes up the whole phone line, so that calls cannot be made or taken while the user is connected.
