My Orcon
Who to follow on Twitter?
With the current mainstream media obsession with Twitter you might be feeling the pressure to get involved (if you haven't already). If you want to get the most out of it, it is all about who you follow. Here's are a few suggestions to get you started.
Follow famous people and find out their amazing lives are really just like yours or mine!
Celebrities are a bit of a mixed bag. Those who genuinely do it (i.e. don't employ a PR agency to tweet on their behalf) can be quite interesting. Here is a selection to get you started, but they aren't hard to find.
There are a lot of musicians on Twitter, for them it is a great way to engage with their fans. Some of them are great, and genuinely do get involved in conversations with their followers. Others seem to just use it to pump out links to buy tickets to upcoming concerts, albums, or merchandise. Here are a handful of the more famous ones:
I have had a surprisingly difficult time finding local celebrities on Twitter. Perhaps because they aren't there, maybe because by it's nature it is easier to find users with huge numbers of followers, something Kiwi celebs are unlikely to attract (at least not on the same scale as the 'Famous People' listed above). The guys and girls over at TV3/C4 seem to be pretty keen on it though:
Of course the most important one of all: Orcon.
Don't take any of this too seriously though, just dive in and find people that interest you. Some of the most interesting people on Twitter are not famous at all. They are just really good at writing thoughtful/provocative/engaging/imaginative/inspiring messages that are less than 140 characters. Of course if you want to follow Britney Spears, that's ok too.
If you do want help finding more people to follow there are plenty of Twitter directories popping up around the place. Check out CelebrityTweet, WeFollow, or Just Tweet It for example.
