Which web browser?

5 February 2007 - Written by Duncan Blair - Softwar

To get the best Internet browsing experience it helps to be with New Zealand's best ISP. It is also a good idea to have one of the latest Internet browsers installed on your computer. Read on to find out more about some of the browsers that we recommend.

The latest browsers are faster, safer, and let you do more things than older browsers.

There are several options for web browsing software. Which one you prefer will often be a matter of personal choice. The great thing about these web browsers is that they are all free, so you can download as many of them as you like, try them out, and decide which one is best for you.

Here are a few of our favourites:

Browsers the Orcon Helpdesk support

These are browsers that the Helpdesk will help you set up and get running smoothly when you set up your Internet connection with Orcon. We will also check them when troubleshooting if you are having problems with your connection.

Mozilla Firefox

A great web browser for Mac and PC users alike. Mozilla should be given a lot of credit for really speeding up the development of web browsing software. The latest version (Firefox 3) is easy to use, good looking (you can even download themes to make it look different), and supports add-ons (people develop useful little additions to the bowser which you can choose to install).

Note for Mac users: Mozilla also make a Mac-specific browser called Camino.

Microsoft Internet Explorer

Microsoft has taken a lot of abuse over the years for not giving Internet Explorer the attention it needed. To their credit they took this on board, and have come out with a great Internet browser, IE 7. This is a significant upgrade over Internet Explorer 6. It looks good and works well.

Browsers the Orcon Helpdesk don't support (but we still think are pretty nifty)

These browsers are still great, but because they are used by a minority of people we do not officially support them. If you are confident using your computer then feel free to give them a try.

Flock

Billed as 'the social web browser', Flock is a relatively new player on the web browsing scene. Along with most of the features provided in the more established web browsers, Flock offers integration of some of the most popular social web applications. This allows you to easily upload photos, get updates from your favourite sites, and search the web. If you love using sites like Flickr and Photobucket and are into getting updates on your favourite sites via RSS then you might like Flock as much as we do.

Opera

Opera has been around for years and has a great track record. Many people prefer Opera to some of the more popular browsers because of its great built in features.
