Travel tool kit for the chic geek

11 February 2009 - Written by Duncan Blair - Useful Tip

I am off tonight on a UK adventure with the Alternative Albion team. Our mission: to experience Alternative Britain, and report back via any and all channels that we can. In order to do this I am going to be relying heavily on my geek tool kit, I thought I would share with you what this includes.

13" Macbook

Apple Macbook Black

I love my Macbook, it goes everywhere with me. It is the center of my digital lifestyle. Perfect for sitting down at the end of the day and whipping up a blog post about the days activities, getting the days photos off the camera, editing up a quick movie, and generally keeping all my digital artifacts in check.

iPhone

Apple iPhone

Is there any other option? Filled up with some great little apps like language guides and wi-fi finders (and a few games to kill time on the planes/trains/buses/tubes) it is a great little travel tool. Being able to jump online quickly and update my twitter account, or check my email is perfect.

Sony cybershot DSC T200 Digital Camera

My little Sony digi cam takes great photos, and is a super compact size. While it might not take photos that are going to end up on the cover of National Geographic, it does a great job of capturing the moment to share with friends and family. Added bonus is that it takes pretty good shots in dark clubs.

Flip Video Camera

Flip Video Camera

How cool are these? Technically I don't have it with me just yet, but I totally intend to pick one up while up in the UK. These things are tiny, cheap, and take great video - what more could you want?

Sennheiser HD25 Headphones

Sennheiser HD25

If you are as much of a music fan as me a good pair of headphones are worth their weight in gold. My Senny's weren't cheap, but they sound amazing. When you are traveling you definitely want some on-ear headphones, ear buds can get pretty irritating on a 26 hour flight.

STM Evolution Backpack

STM Evolution Backpack

Of course when you are carting around this much geek gadgetry you need something sturdy to keep your toys in. The STM Evolution backpack fits the bill perfectly - lots of padding inside and out, loads of pockets, and plenty of room for all the gadgets and associated chargers and cables.

Multi Plug Adaptor

With all these gadgets to keep charged it is super important to remember a multi plug adaptor that can deal with any and all wall sockets that you might come across. It wouldn't be  much of a geek holiday if your gadgets all died.

Tripit.com

This site is AWESOME. It keeps track of your whole itinerary, just like a real travel agent. Once you have set up an account all you have to do is forward on the flight booking confirmations that you get from the airlines and it figures out your itinerary for you.

So, that is my geek tool kit. Got anything that you think is essential for the ultimate geek getaway? Let us know in the comments below.

For those that are interested, there will be daily updates from me and the rest of the Alternative Albion crew over at www.altalbion.co.nz, and I will be posting some of my tech adventures right here... stay tuned.
