What makes a street style blog? Simply, a photographer with a good eye and a penchant for capturing well dressed folks on the streets of the places they live and work in. Dig a little deeper though and it's clear that street style photographers and their associated web sites are some of the biggest influences in the fashion and design worlds right now. Most big cities now have at least a handful of street snappers battling it out for style documentation supremacy.
Here's a few of the best street style blogs on the planet:
- Altamira NYC is essentially populated with photos of models 'off duty'. Great browsing if you're a model follower. http://www.altamiranyc.blogspot.com/
- While based in London the Face Hunter manages to circumnavigate the globe regularly, including a recent trip to New Zealand. His photography style is loose and off the cuff; and his subjects are not necessarily polished, but still worthy of style props. http://facehunter.blogspot.com/
- Vanessa Jackman is a lawyer turned street photographer. Her European portraits are intimate and the value of them more often than not lies beyond the clothes. http://vanessajackman.blogspot.com/
- Styleclicker claims he has more shoes than his wife. He presents fashion and style from the streets of Munich and beyond. http://www.styleclicker.net/
- Probably the best known of the lot - Scott Schuman "just wanted to take photographs of people on the street who looked great". Today his blog The Sartorialist is cited as a source of inspiration for designers such as Lanvin's Albert Elbaz. http://thesartorialist.blogspot.com/ (Want Sart to shoot you? Check out this handy guide http://www.refinery29.com/street_fashion/get_shot_by_sartorialist.php)
- Incidentally, when the Sartorialist is off duty, he's dating French internet icon Garance Dore. Dore says she was raised reading her mother's glossies, and now shoots for them herself, as a result of her gorgeous street style images. http://www.garancedore.fr/en/
- For something a bit different geography-wise, check out The Streets Walker, the results of Yael Sloma's shooting missions in surprisingly hip Tel Aviv. http://www.thestreetswalker.com/
- Hel Looks, hailing from Finland's Helsinki, is one of the oldest sites in the genre. The pictures are taken in the streets and clubs of Helsinki from July 2005 - and anything goes. Hel Looks' the subjects find inspiration in everything from gypsy style to retro free-skiers. http://www.hel-looks.com/
- Last but not least one of the latest sites on the block is Olivia Coote's Auckland Street Style. Olivia, who is adorable and chic in her own right, regularly updates with the blog with shots of Auckland's stylish - people lurking around K Road, well dressed students and Queen St fashion. http://www.aucklandstreetstyle.com/
Of course there's hundreds more out there. Do share your favourites with the rest of us - there's no such thing as too much inspiration when it comes to getting dressed in the morning.
