Sites we love

Friday July 06, 2007 ~ Posted by: Duncan Blair

There are some websites that we just love. Some because they are useful, some because they are a great way to kill time, and some just because they are unlike anything else. This is a brief roundup of some of our favorites that we thought we would share with you...

Flickr

Flickr is all about sharing your photos with your friends, family, and the world. As a start up it gained a lot of attention from geeks and photography enthusiasts, and was recently acquired by Yahoo. You can get started with a free account, or pay if you want to upload more photos. You can connect with your friends and family around the world, and are able to do all kinds of things, like leaving comments each others photos. You control who sees what, and it is a great place to put all those digital snaps you take.

Engadget

Here at Orcon we really are geeks at heart (some of us are geeks in body, mind, and soul also). There is nothing we like more than learning about the latest gadgets (well, maybe actually playing with them). Engadget is the authority on the latest and greatest of tech toys.

Digg

Digg is a community that is all about user powered content. Members of the community submit links to news stories, pictures, videos and other content, which is then voted on by the Digg community. Everyone can then check out the most popular content. It is a great way to discover what is hot at the moment.

Biggie

Our friends at Biggie have grown their site from a dance music community to be a complete entertainment guide (and still a community of course!). Besides the active forums there are also entertainment guides galore, event photos and reviews, competitions, tech gadgetry, and the latest entertainment news.

PriceSpy

PriceSpy is a massive database of pricing from many different NZ online retailers. It covers computer hardware, software, components, and other electronics (phones, gaming consoles and cameras).

Twitter

Twitter is described as "global community of friends and strangers answering one simple question: What are you doing?" Once you have an account (which is free) you can answer that question via text message, the website, or your instant messaging service. The only catch is that you are limited to 140 characters for each post (or 'tweet' as they call them). You can add your friends, and follow what they are doing. Some people are calling this 'micro-blogging'. It is easy, interesting, free and it is fun.
