All you ever wanted to know about Interleaving

Monday October 30, 2006 ~ Posted by: Duncan Blair

Since we have launched our new plans we have been overwhelmed by the number of people asking about interleaving. The good news is that on all new Max download speed plans Interleaving is turned off by default.

Telecom are currently experiencing difficulties in turning off interleaving on some exchanges. If you experience any difficulty with your connection please contact us and we can raise this with Telecom. They have said that they will have this issue resolved by Wednesday this week.

What is Interleaving?

Interleaving is a technique of arranging data for digital transmission to protect against burst errors. While these errors are annoying, they very rarely occur.

For a more complete explanation see the Wikipedia article.

Why turn Interleaving off?

Interleaving increases the amount of latency on the data transmission. Latency adds a small delay in the time taken for data to travel from one computer to another.

By turning interleaving off we can improve the performance of latency sensitive applications such as voice over IP (VOIP) and online gaming.

There is a very small chance that this will create problems with your broadband line. If this is the case you can just give us a call and we will have interleaving turned back on.

So far reports from customers have been overwhelmingly positive, particularly from gamers. So if you are not yet an Orcon customer why not build your own broadband plan and sign up today.

Existing Orcon Customers

If you were on one of the old Orcon Broadband 3.5Mbps plans your speed will have been automatically upgraded to Max, but interleaving will still be turned on. If you would like interleaving turned off on your line you will need to let us know.

If you are on a 256Kbps or 2Mbps plan you are not able to have interleaving turned off. This option is only available on Max download speed plans.
