FAQs
What will I need for a broadband connection?
DSL Broadband Modem
You will need a DSL modem to connect to the Orcon broadband network as your 33.6 or 56k dialup modem is not compatible with the high-speed service.
If you currently have Telecom JetStream or DSL with another provider, then your existing modem should be able to connect to Orcon broadband.
If you are moving onto Orcon's Next Generation Network, to get the most out of it we recommend you use a modem that is ADSL2+ compliant. We can rent you the awesome Orcon Homehub.
DSL-enabled Phone Line
To allow you to talk and use the Internet at the same time, your line needs to be set up to separate the voice and data components at your premises and the local telephone exchange.
DSL Line Filter(s)
To separate the voice and data streams coming over your phone line, you need to have a line filter installed which provides phone and Internet jack points. This is automatically included if you go for a "Full Install", but for "Self Install" options you will need to purchase a line filter for each jack point you plug a device into.
Ethernet or USB-Capable computer
We generally recommend you have a 1Ghz or faster computer with an Ethernet networking card or USB port onboard to get the best out of the Internet with Orcon broadband. If you don't currently have an Ethernet card, ask your local computer supplier if your computer will support it. An Ethernet card costs between $20 and $80.
