FAQs
Will my Internet speeds on the new Orcon+ network be faster than what I currently experience?
We do know Orcon's new network is pretty damn quick - capable of a maximum download speed of 24 Mbps and a maximum upload speed of 1 Mbps. This is possible because with 'unbundling' we've installed the infrastructure for an ADSL2+ network. This results in a dramatic improvement in the available download speed of the network, meaning the possibility of much faster internet for you!
Remember that the actual speed that you experience may differ depending on your distance from the telephone exchange, the quality of your telephone line, and the speed of the website you're visiting.
This is because the greater the distance the signal has to travel, the more it deteriorates, so the further you are from the telephone exchange, the slower your maximum speed. The quality of the wiring affects some connections as older wiring can’t always handle ADSL2+ speeds as well as newer wiring, and given that some of New Zealand’s copper is 80 years old, this can sometimes pose a problem. The speed you experience when visiting different websites will also vary, as no matter how fast your download speed is, you will still be limited by the finite upload speed of the server the website is hosted on.
Most people during our trial have been experiencing connection speeds of between 5Mbps and 20Mbps depending on their distance from the exchange. We are confident that we can deliver you a better broadband experience than you have previously been used to.
