$75 a month
ORCON GENIUS

IT'S CHEAPER BECAUSE IT'S SMARTER.

Orcon Genius is the home phone and broadband modem in one.

It puts your phone calls over the internet and saves you money. And it's a super-styley modem with a really strong Wi-Fi signal that lets you hook up to the internet just about anywhere round the house. All for just $75 a month (on a 24 month contract). Now that's genius.

Orcon Genius puts your home phone over the internet, so you don't pay landline rental charges. Then for just $75 a month you get a huge 30GB of broadband – or 5GB of broadband plus unlimited national landline calls*. That's cheap. Really cheap.

Unlimited FREE downloads from Orcon O Zone sites

With Orcon Genius you get Orcon O Zone, which lets you download and stream to your heart's content from some of NZ's most visited sites – without it counting towards your monthly allowance. Sites like: trademe.co.nz, nzherald.co.nz, nzonscreen.com, georgefm.co.nz and iSKY.co.nz

Voicemail, Call Waiting and Caller ID are all free

With Genius you get a Smartphone bundle of services for no extra cost. Receive messages while you're away, see who's calling you, and be alerted to a second incoming call while you’re on the phone.

Stop paying landline rental – put your calls over the internet instead

Orcon Genius puts your phone line online – so you can stop forking out for costly monthly landline rental charges. Plus, to keep things simple, Orcon Genius also lets you keep your old number. And your callers won't even notice the difference in call quality either. It's simply the way all phones will work once New Zealand has a fibre optic cable network. But why wait? You could be the first genius in your street to own one.*

*Monitored devices such as a medic alert or monitored alarm require a landline and are therefore not compatible with the Orcon Genius

Genius calls are not counted towards your data cap

All VoIP calls on Genius are part of our OZone and so you can call as much as you like without it contributing to your monthly data usage.

Orcon Genius is your Wi-Fi and home phone in one. That's smart. Plus its stronger Wi-Fi signal lets you talk or surf just about anywhere at home. That's super smart.

No need to change your home phone

Orcon Genius has a phone jack point on the side for any standard phone (remember too, with Orcon Genius installed, you won't need to (or be able to) plug phones into your existing phone jacks). Plus, if you like, you can separate Orcon Genius's phone base station from its modem and place them in different rooms.

It's your home phone. It's your Wi-Fi modem. It's heaps less clutter

Because one Orcon Genius is smart enough to do the job of two devices – your wi-fi modem and your homephone – there's a lot less cabling and fewer devices around your house. Plus, you can wall-mount it to keep things even tidier. And it only uses up to 12w of power.

Better yet, it doesn't take up much space at all: it's only 255mm wide, 229mm high, 31mm deep.

Class-leading Wi-Fi – lets you surf in more places around the house.

Thanks to Orcon Genius's meaty, class-leading 802.11n Wi-Fi signal, you can get a great connection pretty much anywhere at home, even when you're all online at once*. And because it's smart enough to simultaneously support 802.11b, 802.11g and 802.11n wireless standards, even most older laptops can join-in the fun too.

*Various factors in your home may affect your Wi-Fi range

Upload and download to your heart's content – with data caps from 5GB to 300GB

You can choose the data cap that matches your needs– anything from 5GB, all the way to a humungous 300GB. And if you're not sure how much you'll be using, don't worry, you don't need to be a genius to work it out because we'll give you a hand when you sign-up. That's smart.

Super-easy one-step installation – just plug it in

Plug it in and wait five minutes. Orcon Genius will get itself connected to the Orcon network – even the Wi-Fi will start automatically. It'll install updates all by itself too. That's really, really smart.

Get your voicemail via email

Orcon Genius is like a super-efficient secretary – it doesn't just take your messages, it sends them to your email inbox as an audio file for you. That's smart too.

The perfect place to park and share all those downloads

With four Ethernet and 1 USB connection, Orcon Genius makes it super-quick and easy to store what you find online. Simply hook-up your external hard-drive and everyone can share the goodness over your Wi-Fi.

All this – and a Smartphone charger too

Instead of digging around for your charger, just plug your Smartphone into Orcon Genius's USB port. Quick. Easy. And smart.

Voicemail, Call Waiting and Caller ID are all thrown in for free.

Handset has phone book, alarm clock, adjustable ring tones and volume, handsfree speakerphone.

VoIP calls are not counted towards your data cap.

Unlimited calls to national landlines is for calls of up to one hour's duration after which Orcon toll rates will apply.

Q - What happens if I go over my data cap?

The Orcon Genius is not compatible with monitored devices as there will be no landline to your premises.

Genius Product FAQs

Q - Can I still buy Naked broadband from Orcon?

Orcon Genius IS naked broadband. We throw in a phone line that works over your broadband connection at no extra cost, so you have a phone number that's there if you need it. If you don't want to use it, just don't plug a phone in. Simple.

Q - What if I want both the national calling AND the extra data bundle?

No problem at all – you just start with one bundle then you can add extra add-ons as you like.

Q - I'm an existing customer, can I switch to Orcon Genius?

You sure can. If you're in a contract already, you can change but you'll have to take up a new contract.

Q - Why can't I use my other phone jacks?

Because your phone calls will go over the internet, all phones in your house need to be directed through the modem. This means any other jackpoint in the house (except the one that your Orcon Genius is plugged into) will stop working. If you need more than one phone at your place, see the FAQ above.

Q - Do the VoIP calls count towards my data allowance?

No, the VoIP calls will not count towards the customer's monthly data allowance.

Q - I don't want to receive my voice messages to my e-mail, can I listen through the handset instead?

Absolutely. The voicemail sending to your email is only an optional extra. All customers will be able to record and listen to voicemails through their phone.

Q - If I need more data later, can I change my plan?

Yes, even if you're within contract you can change your data cap if you need to. We do limit this to one change per month though.

Orcon Genius Setup FAQs

Q - Do I need to have my computer switched on in order to make calls on Orcon Genius?

No, that's what's genius about it. When your phone is plugged in to Orcon Genius it will work exactly as it does today.

Q - Is there a softphone or application I need to download?

No.

Q - What happens to the phone if there is a power outage, or my modem has a fault?

Your phone will stop working as it relies on the modem in order to make and receive calls. If you need your phone to keep working in the event of a power outage, Orcon Genius is probably not the right product for you. Take a look at our Orcon@Home plans instead.

Q - I have a phone at home already that I want to keep using. Can I?

Yes. Orcon Genius Lite comes with all the same plans as Orcon Genius, but the device doesn't have a handset. This means you can plug your own phone directly into the side of the modem and use that instead.

Q - Do I need an ADSL splitter?

No. Because your phone plugs into the Orcon Genius modem (not the wall) you don't need a splitter.

Q - What if I need more than one phone in my house?

If you want either one or two phones: Orcon Genius comes with one handset built in, that can be detached and used anywhere else in the house. You also have a phone port on the side of the modem to plug in a second phone.

If you want more than two phones: If you needed more than two handsets, you can get a multi-handset DECT solution from most electronics stores. Just remember to plug the central base station into the phone port on the Orcon Genius modem.

Q - How easy is it to set up?

We think Orcon Genius is as simple as it gets. Follow the instructions that come with the box just to plug the cables into the right places, flick the power on and everything else is done for you. You'll be browsing the web and making VoIP phone calls in minutes.

Q - How do I know when Orcon Genius is ready to use?

You'll get an email from us ahead of time telling you the day your service will be activated. On the day, you'll get another email when it's done. You'll also notice that you lose dial tone on your home phone, meaning it's time to set up your Orcon Genius and move your phone over to IP.

Orcon Genius Modem FAQs

Q - How good is the wireless signal?

Orcon Genius and Orcon Genius Lite both use Wireless N, the fastest standard of in-home wireless available. The indoor range is approximately 70 metres and is backward compatible with Wireless 802.11b or 802.11g technology. Wireless signal may be degraded by environmental factors such as walls, doors and other electrical devices.

Q - Is Orcon Genius IPv6 capable?

The hardware is, yes. We will update the firmware soon.

Q - Can I attach a storage device to it?

Yes – the USB port can be used to connect any storage device to the modem. This will enable you to share files, downloads, or any other stored content. Any laptop, PC, smartphone or device connected to Orcon Genius will then be able to see that storage device as a drive. There are further instructions on this in the install guide that comes with your Orcon Genius.

Q - What is the range of the built-in Genius handset?

30m indoors, 300m outdoors.

Q - What features does the handset have?

  • Address book
  • Selection of ring tones and adjustable volume
  • Alarm clock
  • Handsfree speakerphone

Q - Can other VoIP products be used on Orcon Genius?

You can use all web-based VoIP service (like Skype, or gaming console VoIP services) as you would on any normal broadband line, but these will count towards your data cap. However the average voice call is very small.

Q - How big are the voicemails that get sent to my email inbox? Is there a size limit?

The average voicemail (less than 1 minute duration) will be less than 100kb WAV file which is very small. There is no size limit for this service.

Q - Can I use this for my business?

Orcon Genius is designed for residential customers only at this stage.

Q - Can I use VOIP on my dial up connection?

Sorry no, you need ADSL for this service to work.

Q - What is the sound quality like when making calls?

We have tested it ourselves (most Orcon staff now use this in their homes!) and we think it's just as good as a normal phone line. Some of us even think it's a little bit better.

Q - Do I need a fixed IP address?

No, this service will work regardless of your IP address – and will keep working if it changes.

Q - I have a VoIP-capable modem already, can I use this on Genius?

Sorry no, you'll need an Orcon Genius or an Orcon Genius Lite for this service to work.
